With the Aurora Australis gaining popularity we’d thought we’d share some great locations that are easily accessible with a campervan and all close to Hobart.



  1. TINDERBOX - 25 minutes from Hobart, Tinderbox serves as an accessible escape from the hustle and bustle. It boasts a diverse array of natural features and landscapes.

    You can explore pristine waters with stunning views of the ocean and South facing views to Bruny Island. You can walk onto the beach or around the rock forshore these outcrops are not only visually striking but also provide excellent opportunities for exploration and photography, making them a great place to capture the Aurora Australis.

    The road coninues around the point where you'll find yourself surrounded by lush paddocks showcasing the rich agricultural landscape of the region. Here you'll find a more elevated Aurora Australis viewing point overlooking the Channel region and Bruny Island.

  1. DRU POINT - Heading South around the bay is Dru Point, located in Margate.

    Dru Point is South facing from the boat ramp here you'll have views looking down the Channel and Bruny Island tp the East and South. Keeping in mind that this area is also a local fishing area so it some light pollution from surrounding businesses, however as you can see from the photo it's definately worth checking out.

  1. KETTERING - Heading down the channel you'll come to the picturesque town of Kettering, a quaint destination that serves as a gateway to some of the most stunning coastal views in the region. Kettering is not only a charming place to visit but also an ideal starting point for exploring the nearby coastal Island attractions including Bruny Island.

    From Kettering, there are several scenic spots along the coast that are well worth a visit, each offering its own unique perspective of the breathtaking landscape. One of the standout locations is Trial Bay. Trial Bay has BBQ facilities, toilet amenties and a boat ramp.

  1. BRUNY ISLAND - Hop aboard the Sealink ferry with the van. A short 10min trip will get you to a whole new place to explore. The Sealink Ferry runs approxamity every 30min.

    Bruny Island Neck is a spectacular place to visit at night not only for the Aurora Australis but you'll have plenty of company with the local penguins.

    Cape Bruny lighthouse is captured beautifully with an Aurora dancing in the background and easy accessible with a campervan.

    There are endless places to pull up and camp on Bruny Island where you can emurse yourself and fully experience Island life.

    Bruny Island is a very special place and somewhere you'll definitely want to come back for more.

  1. SEVEN MILE BEACH - This beach is not only known for its natural beauty, but its close proximity to the Hobart International Airport which makes it incredibly convenient for travellers arriving in the area.

    Seven Mile Beach is renowned for its long stretches of golden sand that seem to stretch endlessly along the coastline, providing ample opportunities for leisurely strolls, as well as making it a great spot for photography enthusiasts looking to capture the Aurora Australis.

    Seven Mile Beach offers several nearby camping areas that are ideal for pitching a tent or parking a campervan.

    Best part is, more often than not you'll pretty much have the whole beach to yourself.
